While reading old newspapers, I am stunned not by how much things have changed, but actually how much they haven't. This little ditty comes from the June 1876 edition of the Albemarle Enterprise from Stanly County, North Carolina.
1776 - 1876
1776
Farmer at the Plow
Wife milking the Cow
Daughter spinning yarn
Boys thrashing in the barn
All happy to a charm.
1876
The farmer gone to a show
His daughter at the piano
Madam gaily dressed in satin
All the boys learning Latin
With a mortgage on the farm.
I wonder what they would have to say about 1976.......or better yet, Twenty Twelve?
