Company C of the 42nd Regiment

There are about 17 relatives in this list. Not all of them returned. Henry Davis was actually his sons Hampton and Hawk, who signed up under their father's name. Hampton Aldridge was the son of Prussia mentioned in my previous post and Josiah was his uncle, the brother of her husband Garner.

• Co. C of the 42nd Regiment, Civil War

• Feb. 1 1862 , Stanly County, NC
• This company was raised in Stanly Co NC at Salisbury on Feb 1,1862. It was mustered as Company D of Major George Gibb's prison guard and assigned to guard duty at the Salisbury prison. In April of 1862 the company was reoraganized as a regiment and then became Co. C of the 42nd regiment . The usual length of enlistment was three years. However those that enlisted for less than three years were assigned to William Howard's prison guard and continued to serve at the Salisbury prison. On May 5,1861 a meeting was called at the courthouse and the cause was presented by Dr Richard Anderson. Volunteers were called for. On May 15, 1862, the young volunteers met at the courthouse in the center of Albemarle to organize Company C. The woman of the county supervised by a tailor had previously made confederate uniforms using the only sewing machine in the county that belonged to Mr McCAIN . Dressed in their uniforms and with two fifes and a drum they marched from the courthouse to the Marshall Hotel on the square . Louisa Thomas Hearne appeared on the balcony and sang "The Old North State". The people cheered and threw hats into the air the soldiers started their 30 mile hike to Salisbury ,NC. Robert Carter who was the 1st volunteer carried the flag. They left on the night train from Salisbury to Raleigh where they went into training at Camp Ellis. Zebulon Vance ( later became governor) was on the train that night telling jokes and stories. The regiment also trained at Crawford's farm south of Salisbury . The soldiers often said that Lt. Colonel John E. Brown would rather drill than eat. Some of the battles /skirmishes that this company engaged in : Bermuda Hundreds, Drewery Bluff, Gaines Mill, Sheppardsville,Cold Harbor, Wise's Fork, Newport Barracks , Kinston and Fort Fisher ROSTER Captains: Davidson UNDERWOOD -resided in Stanly Co and enlisted at age 32. Appointed Captain on Feb 28,1862. appointed Major on April 22, 1862 and transferred to the field and Staff of this regiment. James HOWELL- resided in Stanly Co and enlisted in Rowan Co at age 29.Appointed Lt on Feb 4,1862 Promoted to Captain on April 22,1862. Killed at Cold Harbor June 3, 1864 "A gallant officier" Robert Allen CARTER-resided in Stanly Co and enlisted in Rowan Co at age 28. Appointed 2nfd Lieutenant on Feb 28,1862. Promoted to 1st Lieutenant on April 22,1862.
